Muxagat Vinhos, Lda

Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is the son of João Nicolau de Almeida, a winemaker who has crafted the profiles of the best wines at Ramos Pinto for many years, and grandson of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the creator of Barca Velha. Mateus wanted to take over the world and after studying and working in Bordeaux, in 2003 he began his own project, Muxagat Vinhos. He lives in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. He says that his wines are a reflection of who he is, an interpretation of reality. The grapes used to make his wines come mostly from the family’s Quinta do Monte Xisto estate and the Quinta do Vale Cesteiros estate in Mêda, which is owned his business partner Eduardo Lopes. They farm organically and follow some concepts of biodynamic agriculture. Their winery in is Mêda. Their policy is to interfere as little as possible in the vinification and allow the characteristics of the soil and the varietal to develop and come through in the wine. The work in the winery is still closely and constantly monitored, however. There is maximum separation of the vinified parts and no extreme yeasts are used. This allows the native yeasts to do their work. They avoid any kind of racking, fining and filtration so as to preserve the wine’s own character.
