Senhor da Misericórdia Chapel

Castelo Novo

Castelo Novo

Built in the second half of the 17th century it has traces of vernacular mannerist style. Legend has it that the chapel was built in honour of Our Lord of Mercy for having kept away a great plague of locusts that was consuming the region’s crops. We know that it was funded with donations from the village and its nobles and the sale of medicinal herbs from the hills. It has a polychrome altarpiece in rococo carving with a central tribune and composite columns. In a tombstone in the wall on the left, we can see the coffin and an image of Our Lord of Mercy. His festival is held in the first weekend of September. There is also a painting by Barata Moura of Our Lord of Mercy and Castelo Novo in the background.
