Castelo Mendo

Although the existence of a Misericórdia and Hospital (1, 2) are documented in Castelo Mendo, we do not know their location. Oral and popular tradition places it at Rua da Praça nº 1, in a renaissance building with plant motifs on the main façade. Today, this two-storey irregular quadrangular house with some renaissance decorative features and Philippine traits near the Guarda gates with an inscription on the window frame “SPES MEA DEVS“ and a cross on top was actually deemed to be a Jewish house, because of the Aaron inside. The south-eastern corner, with notches up to the middle bears a decorative stone shell.
