Mendo and Menda

Castelo Mendo

Castelo Mendo

The two carantonhas (“ugly faces”), ex-libris of the village, are two sculptures located next to the old castle gates. The Menda is on the wall of an old haystack, the Menda House, while the Mendo is part of one of the walls of the old Town Hall. They are two repurposed pieces of unknown chronology, and Mendo may have been the gargoyle of a Romanesque church.
