Around Sortelha’s two churches, especially Misericórdia, outside the gates, there are abundant traces of tombs carved out of the rock. For many centuries, the churchyards were the favoured places for burying the dead. It was a common practice that attests to the age of these churches. The tombs were carved out of the granite and some are still there today and well preserved. Their shape in anthropomorphic, oval or rectangular. There are adult and child-size tombs. Many were buried when the pavement around the churches was laid.
